Problem Solved (8A)

Continuing my conversation about outlets, I think there is an opportunity here. Not all coffee shops will take me up on this depending on the culture they want to establish in their shop but some might!

My selected opportunity is the lack of accessible outlets in coffee shops. It’s incredibly frustrating to come to work/study in a coffee shop but every outlet is taken so you either have to work on something that doesn’t require a charge or change locations meaning you go home or to the library, aka wasted time. (However, even going to a coffee shop is never wasted time in my opinion)

I think creating and implementing a product of desks with outlets pre-installed would be incredibly beneficial to coffee shops. It would be cheaper for existing coffee shops to bring in new desks and tables than to rip out and install new outlets in the walls. I have seen this work very effectively in libraries.(However, if a coffee shop has a more rustic culture, having very techy desks may ruin the vibe they are aiming for. On the other hand, implementing these desk in say a Starbucks I feel would be very successful.)

An addition to this would be perhaps setting up coffee shops to be divided into certain areas. For example, part of the shop would be devoted to a study space which would have outlets and the other half of the shop would be for those who just want to come and talk. Those would be the set expectations of the shop. However, with this, I could see some people still getting frustrated that only the study section has outlets but having them in an isolated section might save the cafe money. There will always be pros and cons in this situation on both the customer and owner side.

  1. Hey! I like these solutions, as they are quite simple and effective. I think by informing coffee shops about this, they could easily try to implement this in their shops. I am quite excited to see how this idea unfurls, as i love going to coffee shops and sitting down to do my work or study for an exam.

  2. Hi Juliana,
I really liked your thoughts on this subject. The outlet idea is really cool and interesting idea.. I don't think it would ruin the general "vibe" of at least Starbucks, because I know that Starbucks tries to be as modern as possible. And in Starbucks in particular, the outlet idea would do some good, being that the store does not do well placing easily accessible outlets.

  3. Hi! I enjoyed your solutions to your issue. Similarly, I liked how you pointed out that it would be cheaper to install new tables with outlets as opposed to installing them in pre-existing tables. While I see it being inconvenient for a coffee shop to make the investment right now, I could see new coffee shops that have yet to open more readily take up the idea. They could also benefit from your concept of dividing the store into study areas and other, more social areas.
